Class Descriptions

Develop a solid foundation of the fundamental techniques that span across all dance styles. Ballet is the foundation of all forms of dance.  This class will focus on the classical elements of ballet, teaching students’ proper technique and body alignment.  Students will practice traditional barre sequences, positions, technique and utilize progressions to move fluidly across the floor. All EDA students are encouraged to take ballet to learn basic terms, polish skills, and develop the bodily awareness that prevents injury.  Classes demand high focus from the student but are very valuable to their progression as a dancer.

Dancers learn to coordinate rhythm, agility, and musicality to execute clear tap sounds and sharp movements. Expect bustling feet, patterned claps, and lots of laughs! Students explore the exciting spirit of dance as they condition their body, increase familiarity of music and beats, and foster healthy self-expression. Classes will integrate the fundamentals of ballet for proper technique while using exciting music and fresh moves. It is highly recommended that students have ballet training while taking jazz.

Contemporary/Lyrical dance is built upon the fundamental principal that moving your body to music feels good.  This class encourages students to find confidence and joy in their own creative and physical potential while challenging them to find a greater range of expression through dynamic physicality and specificity.  Phrases full of motion, oppositional tension, and weight change are the core of this class. Contemporary/Lyrical dance utilizes both the strong and controlled legwork of ballet and modern dance's stress on the torso, and
also employs contract-release, floorwork, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristic of modern dance.  Unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction are often used in this form of dance. Ballet class is highly recommended for the dancer interested in Contemporary dance.

*Dress code: Form fitting clothing, Hair Up Away from Face, preferably Barefoot as dancers must be able to feel the floor but Foot Undies or Half Soles acceptable.
